Thoughts
This is my first foray into the writings of Freida McFadden. It’s hard to describe but I really didn’t care for her writing, but I also couldn’t put the book down.
The story revolves around Natalie Farrell, the “beautiful, popular, top sales rep” for a nutritional supplement company. When her coworker, Dawn, doesn’t show up for work, Natalie becomes the chief suspect in her disappearance.
The story is told in alternating chapters going from Natalie’s point of view as she starts looking into Dawn’s disappearance to Dawn’s emails – potential clues as to what happened to her.
And then there’s a twist. A twist some readers are likely to see coming, but it really doesn’t slow down the pace of the book. I dare not say more so as not to spoil it…
I picked this book because there is an accountant as one of the main characters. To say she’s on the spectrum would be an understatement. As an accountant (and at least a little neurodivergent) myself, I could definitely see why this character was an accountant. But if I never hear another thing about turtles ever again, it will be too soon. Interestingly, I believe McFadden almost titled this book The Turtle, which wouldn’t have been the worst title.
In the end, I gave this one 3 out of 5 stars. It was pretty okay, but I felt even less about the ending than I did about McFadden’s writing. And yet, I’m pretty sure I’ll pick up another one of her books at some point.
