Thoughts

This is an Icelandic saga from the 13th century about Gunnlaug, a sharp-tongued poet and aspiring courtier, and his betrothal genuine affection with Helga. However, fate and timing conspire against them, culminating in a deadly duel abroad and heartbreak at home. While I can appreciate the historical value of this one, I found it emotionally distant and structurally abrupt. Part of that may have been the translation, but I also just didn’t find the characters in the story compelling. I gave this 3 out of 5 stars.
