Thoughts

The short introduction in this book states that Hopkins was considered unpublishable in his time. Time… hasn’t helped much. In fact, it may have made it worse. This short book is a selection of poems that Hopkins wrote, as well as excerpts from his journals. The poems were repetitive and sometimes incomprehensible. I don’t really understand why his friend felt they should be published posthumously. It was a nice gesture, but unnecessary. The editors at Penguin must have seen something in the writings making them worth including in this this series, but I couldn’t find it.
