Thoughts
This book picks up threads left from the main series and puts into motion changes in the Vulcan people toward what we would come to know of them in later series. It was really interesting watching the Vulcans go through an existential crisis, with good Vulcans and bad Vulcans and everything in between. Of course as the one who discovered the Kir’Shara and carried Surak’s katra, Archer gets involved with the assistance of T’Pol to prove the Kir’Shara is authentic and help the Vulcan people move on toward a future without violence. It’s a great continuation of what we saw on the show as well as what we’ve gotten in the stories set after the show.
The other storyline, follows up on a different thread left from the main series and just runs with it. We get to see a lot more of Travis in this storyline, which is nice since he never really got a lot to do on the show. This story essentially sets up the main story for the next novel and does it well.
Christopher L. Bennett can always be counted on to do good tie-in work. His books have all the easter eggs there for the fans – but generally done well. Not just shoehorned in to make a nice little reference.
Overall, I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars. It’s well-written as usual, but it did take me some effort to pick it up and read it. That may just be because Enterprise wasn’t always one of my favorites in the Star Trek franchise.
